Every family has a unique bond that can foster lifelong trust and understanding. When parents and children connect deeply, they create a supportive environment that helps everyone thrive.
TFI’s program, Grow Nurturing Families (GNF), utilizes an evidence-based Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) model. This program emphasizes the importance of the parent-child bond, providing practical strategies for parents to address behavioral issues and foster a nurturing environment.
A key feature of Parent Child Interaction Therapy is the positive, live coaching of caregivers, typically conducted by therapists from an observation room using a one-way mirror and a “bug-in-the-ear” system for communication during play. This allows caregivers to adjust techniques on-the-spot to address behavioral issues and receive immediate and positive feedback that enhances their skill usage.
Positivity through GNF:
Grow Nurturing Families began working with a family that was going through significant challenges. The child exhibited behavioral issues that the parents struggled to manage safely. Additionally, the family had a longstanding history of state intervention that left them feeling isolated and stigmatized.
When the family engaged with GNF, there was initial resistance from one parent. However, the case team remained patient and persistent, working to establish trust and highlight the benefits of them joining the program. Over time, the family’s attitude began to change as they experienced the dedication and support of the GNF team.
A key aspect of the program’s success is the development of connection between the case team, parents and child. Throughout consistent visits a bond was formed. The child’s positive interactions with the therapist, such as eagerly greeting them at the door and engaging in activities like reading and crafting, were clear indicators of the program’s positive impact. The mother even began to actively communicate with the therapist, sharing updates and expressing satisfaction with the improvements she noticed in her child’s behavior and their relationship. As the program progressed, the mother became more engaged, actively participating in therapy sessions and demonstrating a growing confidence in managing her child’s behavior.
Through the steadfast support from the GNF team, the family overcame numerous obstacles and completed the program within one year.
By the end of the program, the family had not only met but exceeded their goals with the help of the care team’s consistent encouragement. The parents also received resources to ensure that they could continue to apply the skills they had learned.
The family has shown remarkable growth and stability since completing the program and regularly updates the team with their successes.
Their regular updates to the program team demonstrate their ongoing commitment to maintaining the positive changes achieved during their time with GNF. The mother’s newfound confidence in her parenting abilities and the child’s continued behavioral improvements highlight the program’s lasting impact.
This success story underscores the transformative power of structured, compassionate support and evidence-based intervention. As the family continues to thrive, their experience serves as a beacon of hope for other families seeking to overcome similar obstacles and build healthier, more nurturing environments.
